Greatest Showman star ‘fighting for his life’

Sam Humphrey is fighting for his life as he prepares to undergo “extremely risky” surgery – according to reports.

American news site TMZ claims the 24-year-old New Zealander is being treated in Los Angeles for complications caused by Crohn’s disease.

Crohn’s is an inflammatory disease of the intestines that can affect the colon and ileum – causing discomfort for sufferers.

The condition is lifelong and can cause symptoms including weight loss, fatigue, stomach aches and cramps.

Humphrey was born with skeletal dysplasia, more commonly known as dwarfism, which affects the growth of bones and cartilage.

TMZ reports his Crohn's is made worse by his skeletal dysplasia,

Sam’s family have also released a statement confirming the star is undergoing treatment.

"He is currently under the care of some of the best doctors in the world at Cedars Sinai and is undergoing high-risk corrective surgery," the statement says.

Sam was one of the stars of the 2017 film The Greatest Showman alongside Hugh Jackman, Michelle Williams, Zac Efron and Zendaya.

The Kiwi played the character Charles Stratton (aka General Tom Thumb) – based on a real actor who lived in the 1800s.

The Greatest Showman was a huge hit with cinema-goers and was Oscar nominated for its soundtrack.

The semi-biographical musical – based on the life of P. T. Barnum – was Sam’s first big screen role.

Sam had previously starred in several episodes of iconic Australian soap, Neighbours, between 2016 and 2017.

Speaking of working with Australian actor Hugh, Sam said he was humbled by the A List star.

“Hugh is very radiant, majestic and tall; no wonder I always look up to him (just a short joke, double pun!)” he joked on Instagram earlier this year.

“But seriously he’s truly a legend!! Can’t wait to work with him again,” the actor added
