Corrie villain Pat Phelan will leave the soap in a bloody exit storyline so gruesome it has to be shown post-watershed.
Phelan, played by Connor McIntyre, goes out in scenes that leave two other Weatherfield stars fighting for their lives after being shot.
Michelle Connor, played by Kym Marsh, is held hostage and wounded. Next week’s episodes are after the 9pm cut-off and the Britain’s Got Talent live shows, so they can show the violent scenes.
Viewers will see blood-splattered walls as Phelan returns for revenge in his final scenes.
Connor, 57, admits the scenes could again divide viewers. He said: “It gives us a bit more of a licence to go further with the story.
“We’ve pushed the boundaries, we’ve pushed the edge of it so we’ll have to see what the reaction is.."
The ITV programme has been criticised by viewers and high-profile fans such as Sir Michael Parkinson for Phelan’s dark storylines.
But it pulled in its highest viewing figures in three years when Phelan’s estranged wife Eileen threw him off a pier last month.
Connor added: “We’ve taken the audience on a couple of false starts. They deserve the pay-off and I think it’s a decent one.”
