Army In Wales Readies To Help Covid-19 Battle

Soldiers have begun oxygen tanker driver training at the BOC Group industrial gas facility in Port Talbot.

Part of UK Defence’s 20,000 strong COVID Response Force, the six soldiers are taking part in a week-long course of classroom-based and vehicle training.

They join 150 Royal Navy, Army and RAF personnel who can drive vital supplies of oxygen to NHS facilities across the UK, if required.
Minister for the Armed Forces James Heappey MP said: “Our superb military planners and logisticians are liaising with the NHS and Welsh authorities ready to support in the battle against Coronavirus, if required.

“The military operations team in Brecon Barracks is in close contact with both the Welsh Government’s Emergency Co-ordination Centre and are providing planning support to Wales’ four regional Local Resilience Forums.”

On 18 March the Defence Secretary announced a COVID Support Force to assist public services with the response to the coronavirus outbreak. As of 23 March, there are 250 personnel deployed to assist civil authorities with the response. They are part of 20,000 armed forces personnel currently stood at readiness to take part.

The Armed Forces have contributed dozens of specialist military planners to Local Resilience Forums who are providing support to public services, local authorities and emergency services in preparing their response to the coronavirus outbreak.
