Coronavirus: Welsh Government and NHS Update

Staff praised for 'outstanding commitment'

Welsh NHS staff have been praised for their efforts in dealing with coronavirus in what health leaders are saying is an unprecedented and fluid situation.

The Chief Medical Offer for Wales, Dr Frank Atherton, and Chief Executive of NHS Wales Andrew Goodall have been giving a live update on the situation here in Wales.

They say testing is being ramped up and 3300 patients have been tested in wales so far with more than 600 testing positive.

Wales is expected to see the virus peak in the coming weeks and the health service is making an unprecedented expansion of critical care beds to deal with the crisis.

Staff have been praised for their outstanding commitment and level of preparation and they have been prosises the support needed to do more in the coming weeks.

We have been told the virus will flare up in parts of Wales and then calm down but at the moment more cases have been diagnosed in South Wales. However, we have been warned that may change.

3.5million PPE items have been distributed to medics so far, including face masks and other protective clothing.

The message to NHS staff was that bosses know they are worried and anxious.

They have been given these reassurances:

  • The NHS will make sure guidance is right;
  • Staff will receive supplies of PPE items. But they have been warned that they are a scarce resource and must be used appropriately.
  • The NHS will communicate guidance effectively because it’s changing all the time.
